Review: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Great GatsbyRead: November 8-17, 2016
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Format: hardcover, 172 pages
Publication: June 1996 by Scribner Classics
Genres: classics, historical, romance

Blurb from Goodreads:

"The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when, The New York Times remarked, "gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession," it is an exquisitely crafted tale America in the 1920s that resonates with the power of myth. A novel of lyrical beauty yet brutal realism, of magic, romance, and mysticism, The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth century literature."
I had....super duper high hopes for this one.....and maybe that's why my rating is so low. I had friends who never read books read it, and tell me that it's a beautiful book. And the romance in this book was lovely.

I. Got. None. Of. That.

It's kinda sad, I think. I think they may be right when they say this book was good, it IS a classic...and classics aren't called classics because they're bad.....usually.

What I DID get....were....slightly confusing characters, a somewhat confusing plot, and a very typical love triangle.

The characters themselves weren't confusing, but...I feel that there were too many characters introduced in such a short amount of time, that I couldn't keep track of who was who...and who did what. I had to flip back and forth to find their descriptions again.

A confusing plot. I confess....I might have skimmed some descriptions...and went online to read the basic plot. I read up until...hmm...page 20....and realised that I didn't really have any idea what was going on....so I went online, read the summary, and then went back to the book. It was a lot easier to read the book, knowing where it was headed and what was going on. WAY easier.

As for the typical love triangle...well....that's what I think of it, anyway. A typical love triangle....CLASSIC style (read: a very confusing way to read something that could have been written simpler)

I think I'll stick to my YA triangles....they may be typical, but at least I understand what's going on!

Ending of the book was also kinda.....eh....not very memorable.

So, I DO feel like I'm missing out on something here.  Everyone who has read this book seems to have enjoyed it.  So...why didn't I?

Side note:  I'm annoyed that Goodreads doesn't have the cover of the version I read.  I mean, Goodreads should have EVERYTHING!  And if they don't have it, it must be some obscure book no one has ever heard of...but this is THE Great Gatsby we're talking about here!  This is what the cover of the book I read actually looked like!

So....tell me.  What am I missing here?  Have you read this book?  Did you like it?
